The Battle Cats and Nyanko Daisensou (にゃんこ大戦争) are essentially the same game at their core. However, the Japanese version and the overseas version have several differences in their stages, localization, collaborations, and event schedules.

PONOS describes The Battle Cats as the overseas version of Nyanko Daisensou. The game is available in more than 140 countries, particularly in English-speaking markets.

The basic gameplay remains the same: you deploy Cats, defeat enemies, collect XP and Treasures, and develop your Cat Army. However, some content can vary depending on the version and region.

1. The Setting of the Early Story Is Different

One of the most noticeable differences is the setting of the early story.

  • Nyanko Daisensou (Japanese Version): The first major story section is the Japan Chapter. Players travel across Japan, including all 47 prefectures, before reaching Iriomote Island.
  • The Battle Cats (Overseas Version): The corresponding story is called Empire of Cats, which uses a world-themed setting and concludes with the Moon stage.

The Japanese version has a strong connection to Japanese geography and culture. Many stages and Treasures are based on Japanese locations and regional themes. In the overseas version, these elements are adapted for an international audience. This is one of the first major differences that players notice when comparing the two versions.

2. Collaboration Events Can Vary

Collaborations are a major part of the Battle Cats experience, but their availability can differ between regions.

  • Exclusive Content: The Japanese version frequently features collaborations with Japanese anime, manga, video games, and other brands.
  • Licensing & Availability: A collaboration available in Japan is not necessarily available in every other region. Licensing agreements and regional distribution can affect where and when collaboration events are held.

There can also be differences in event schedules. For example, an event may appear in the Japanese version at a different time from the overseas version, or a particular collaboration may not be available in a certain region. Therefore, Japanese announcements should not automatically be treated as announcements for the overseas version. Players should check the official announcements for the version they are playing.

3. Character Names and Text Are Localized

Character names and in-game descriptions are also localized between the Japanese and overseas versions. The English names are not always direct, word-for-word translations. Instead, they are often adapted to preserve the character’s concept or humor.

  • Kimo-neko (キモネコ) → Gross Cat: The name Gross Cat reflects the unusual, “creepy-cute” long-legged appearance of Kimo-neko.
  • Neko Bancho (ネコ番長) → Delinquent Cat: Delinquent Cat conveys the rebellious school-themed image associated with Neko Bancho for overseas players.

The localization also applies to character descriptions, stage text, jokes, and other parts of the game. Because Nyanko Daisensou contains many Japanese wordplays and cultural references, some expressions naturally have to be adapted when the game is localized for English-speaking players.

4. The Japanese and Overseas Versions Are Separate Game Versions

The Japanese version of Nyanko Daisensou and the overseas version of The Battle Cats are distributed as separate versions of the game. Because of this, players should not expect their game progress to be interchangeable between the two versions.

For example, installing The Battle Cats does not mean that your existing Japanese Nyanko Daisensou progress will automatically appear in the overseas version. If you play both versions, it is best to think of them as separate game environments. This distinction is also important when looking at characters, events, and version-specific announcements.

5. Updates and Events May Have Different Schedules

Updates and events do not necessarily arrive in the Japanese and overseas versions at exactly the same time. New characters, stages, features, and collaboration events may have different release schedules depending on the version.

The Japanese version often provides information about content that overseas players may not yet have access to, but the exact timing can vary. For this reason, it is better to avoid assuming that an update will arrive in the overseas version after a fixed number of weeks or months. If you play The Battle Cats, check the announcements for your own version to see when new content is actually available.

6. What Is the Same Between the Two Versions?

Despite these differences, the core gameplay is shared between the versions. Both versions allow players to:

  • Deploy Cats
  • Attack enemy bases
  • Earn XP
  • Level up and evolve Cats
  • Collect Treasures
  • Use the Cat Cannon
  • Build and develop a Cat Army

The basic strategy and progression systems are therefore very similar. Someone who has played Nyanko Daisensou should generally be able to understand The Battle Cats quickly, even though some stage names and other content may be different.

Summary

Nyanko Daisensou and The Battle Cats share the same basic gameplay, but there are several differences between the Japanese and overseas versions. The most obvious difference is the setting of the early story.

The Japanese version takes players across Japan, including all 47 prefectures and Iriomote Island, while The Battle Cats uses the world-themed Empire of Cats and eventually takes players to the Moon. There are also differences in Treasures, collaboration events, character names, localization, and update schedules.

If you watch The Battle Cats videos or read Japanese Nyanko Daisensou guides, keep in mind that stage names, event availability, and update timing may differ between versions.
